Celebrate Reading Month with the Children’s Museum of Richmond and Visits by Storybook Characters!

To highlight and celebrate the importance of literacy in early childhood education, the Children’s Museum of Richmond will present special reading-based activities and appearances by beloved children’s book characters.  Scheduled appearances are as follows:

Daniel Tiger

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is a new animated program on PBS Kids, which builds on the PBS series, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. This new series engages preschoolers and their families as Daniel learns fun and practical strategies to build key social skills necessary for school and for life! The series’ stories were written based on extensive input from a wide range of early learning specialists and formative research with children. Join us as we read Daniel Tiger’s Welcome to the Neighborhood by Becky Friedman and talk about kindergarten readiness.

Clifford the Big Red Dog

Since being published in 1963, Norman Bridwell’s book, Clifford the Big Red, has become a household title. Much to her parents’ surprise, Emily Elizabeth’s little red puppy grew and grew until he was 25 feet tall! Now you can not only read about Clifford’s adventures but also watch them unfold before your eyes on the PBS Kids Clifford TV series.

Cookie Mouse

Would you give a mouse a cookie? If you do, you’ll have to give him a glass of milk! Meet the mouse that started it all. We’ll be learning about making inferences while you read with the help of Laura Numeroff’s famous If You Give… Book™ series.

Skippyjon Jones

Judith Byron Schachner’s book Skippyjon Jones won the first annual E.B. White Read Aloud Award in 2004. In 2007 it was named as a “Teachers’ Top 100 Books for Children” by the National Edcuation Association. Skippyjon is a Siamese kitten that believes himself to be a Chihuahua. He now has a series of stories based on the adventures of his canine alter ego, El Skippito, and his imaginary Chihuahua friends. Skippyjon Jones will be visiting CMoR! While you’re there, have your child participate in our Self Portrait station where they can express how they see themselves!

Curious George

“Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble!” The Man in the Yellow Hat didn’t know what he was getting into after brining Curious George home when it was originally published in 1941. Thankfully, the little brown monkey was always getting into trouble and has since traveled into the homes and hearts of families around the world. The New Adventures of Curious George appeared in 1998 and is still being published today!

Llama Llama

Author Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama series has been featured on the NY Times Best Sellers List, the Today Show, and has been used by multiple organizations nationwide to promote literacy. With its focus on rhyming, familial relationships, and everyday issues of young children, this book is perfect to share with your children! Come dressed in your pajamas as we read Llama Llama Red Pajama and learn about the art of the rhyme!

Lilly and the Purple Plastic Purse

Lilly has a hard time being patient. She just wants to show off her brand new purple plastic purse! Author Kevin Henkes perfectly captures the attitude of excited young children in Lilly and the Purple Plastic Purse. Lilly will be visiting CMoR! Have your little one bring something to Show-and-Tell with Lilly herself. Show-and-Tell will be happening at 1pm each day.
