Virginia Repertory Theatre announces the opening of Harper Lee’s classic To Kill A Mockingbird at the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre, 114 West Broad Street on Friday, September 27th with a Preview on Thursday, September 26th.  The show runs through October 20th, 2013.   Long recognized as one of the most influential works of fiction on the criminal justice system, To Kill a Mockingbird and the role of Atticus Finch have impacted lawyers for decades.

Director, Rusty Wilson who is making his directing debut at Virginia Rep talks about his vision and the importance of the show. “This story will never be out of date, or out of fashion, or tired, or irrelevant, because it is a story of the best and the worst of the human struggle. It is fundamentally a story about right and wrong, and the choices we must grapple with about how we live our lives. It is a story about a man who chooses the hard right, rather than the easy wrong, teaching his children by example, not just words. I love that we have a cast of players who will not only tell the story, but witness it as well. This is a big part of my approach to this production. I also wanted to tell the story through the lens of memory, and the traditional spiritual music of the time. The addition of a live, a cappella choir brings a whole new dimension to the production.”

In recognition of this legacy, Virginia Rep will partner with Leadership Metro Richmond and its members from the legal community to support student matinees for middle and high school students.  LMR members from the legal community will facilitate talkbacks with the cast after student matinees and three Friday evening performances.  The Honorable Cleo E. Powell, Supreme Court Justice of Virginia, the Honorable Catherine Hammond, Chief Judge of the Henrico Circuit Court, and Kimberly C. MacLeod from Hunton & Williams are among those addressing students.

Middle and high school matinees will take place on October 3, 4, 10, 17, and 18 at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $14. Shows include talkback with LMR member from the legal community and the cast.

The Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre is equipped with a new state-of the-art induction loop hearing system that is compatible with all telecoil-equipped hearing aids and cochlear implants. A handheld receiver and headphone system is also available free of charge for anyone who is hearing impaired.

Valet parking is available for $8 at during Wednesday matinees and Friday and Saturday evening performances.
