Be the Dinosaur.   A new exhibit at the Science Museum of Virginia.  Check out an animatronic dinosaur and a pterosaur reconstruction as you discover what life was like for dinosaurs. Included with exhibit admission, free for members.

Today – September 30th

Water Play.  Weekdays 1pm-4:45pm.  Saturdays and Sundays 9am-4:45pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.   During warm spring, summer, and fall days, the Children’s Garden is the coolest place to be! Bring or wear your bathing suit and water shoes to enjoy the gentle water sprays. Don’t forget a towel and remember that swimming diapers are required for those not potty-trained. Water Play is operational when the air temperature is 70 degrees or higher.  April 21 – Sept 30. (weather permitting).  Free with garden admission.

Monday, April 28th

Butterflies LIVE! presented by Altria.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.  Butterflies LIVE! is an indoor exhibit in the Conservatory geared for all ages. Get up close and personal as hundreds of tropical butterflies feed, flutter and take flight all around you. FREE hands-on workshops designed for children ages 5 – 12 offered at all Home Depot stores.  Workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills, tool safety and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment. Free SAT Practice Test.   10:30am-2:30pm.   Clover Hill Library Meeting Room.  Take advantage of this opportunity to take a free SAT practice test and find out how you score! This test will be administered by The Princeton Review, with the same guidelines as a real SAT test. Covered beverages are allowed. Combine conductive thread and circuits and make a cool battery-powered LED e-textile cuff. It’s only powered while you’re wearing it, because the fastener acts as a switch. No soldering/wiring required! Registration is required.

Box-It-Up! Your Box Castle.  10:30am-11:30am.  LaPrade Library.  What can you do with a cardboard box? Help  build a castle!. Come dressed as a prince or princess. This program is for pre-schoolers 2-5 years old. Registration is required and begins April 19. Register one person per family. Register online at library.chesterfield.gov or by calling 804-751-CCPL. Teen Studio: Pinhole Camera and Photography.  10:30am-2pm.  Meadowdale Library.  Build a working camera out of a cardboard box, then shoot and develop your own photos in our darkroom! The crafty folks from Stuff Redux, Richmond’s creative reuse center, will provide all materials and show you how to build, shoot and print retro-style. Bring your own brown bag lunch. Please wear clothing appropriate for working with film developing. This program is for teens 12-16 years old. Registration is required and begins April 5. KidFest.  1pm-4pm.  Deep Run Park.  Children of all ages can try their hand at a game on carnival row, take a thrilling ride down the inflatable slide, battle through the obstacle course, dance to their favorite music, explore the Bookmobile, check out educational displays by local agencies and businesses, pet a monkey, meet animals at the “Children’s Farm,” and enjoy much more at this kid-tailored event! Paws To R.E.A.D. Program.  3pm-4pm.  Ginter Park Library, City of Richmond.  Paws to R.E.A.D. is a reading program where children read to pet therapy animals and benefit from a non-threatening, fun environment to practice their reading skills, increase their self-esteem, gain a love of reading, and learn about the human-animal connection. Arena Racing.  7pm.  Richmond Coliseum.  Drivers in ½ scale stock cars racing around a $1/2 million high-banked race track turning laps in UNDER 8 seconds flat while competing side-by-side–bumping, rubbing, flipping and racing in the Richmond Coliseum to get their share of over $50,000.00 in cash paid out over the season!  Fee.

Sunday, May 4th

Open Studio Sundays.  Noon-4pm.  VMFA Art Education Center.  Make Open Studio Sundays part of your family routine! Go by the studios anytime between noon and 4 pm to enjoy “make-it, take-it” art activities inspired by objects from the VMFA collection. A new art project offered every month, with assistance from VMFA volunteers! (For groups of eight or more children, please email megan.liles@vmfa.museum.) Free, no registration required.

Explore the Outdoors.  1pm-5pm.  Huguenot Park and The Community Idea Stations.  Rain or Shine.  Event activities will take place in the park and on the grounds of the Community Idea Stations adjacent to the park. The station studios will be open for tours and kids will have a chance to meet Curious George plus see themselves on TV.  A great day to introduce families to free or inexpensive resources that encourage being outside…exploring, playing, having fun as a family.

Junior Solar Sprint.  1pm-4pm.  Science Museum of Virginia.   Cheer on your favorite sun-powered cars as they race to the finish line. Each car represents a team of one to four students up through 8th grade. Included with exhibit admission for general public, free for members.
