St. Patrick’s Day is marching toward us and before we know it, March 17th will be here! Be sure and wear your green so you don’t get pinched!
A leprechaun is an Irish fairy who is often unfriendly. According to the legend, leprechauns live alone and make shoes for a living. They are small in stature and resemble an old man. It is said that they own a pot of gold, which can be taken from them if you can capture them. Be aware, however, that if you catch a leprechaun, you must always keep your eye on him, or he’ll disappear with his treasure intact.
Every year parents search for creative ideas for leprechaun-related mischief around St. Patrick’s Day. It’s becoming just like the Christmas Elf, kids start talking about it for weeks in advance wondering what the leprechaun will do when he visits the house.
So….. here are some ideas to help you get creative this year. We hope they will save you some time and energy late at night on the 16th as you prepare for the leprechaun’s appearance on March 17th.
- Green milk (1-2 drops of food coloring)
- Underwear on ceiling fans
- Chocolate coins tossed all over the house
- Green toilet water (1-2 drops of food coloring)
- Unraveled toilet paper
- Green footprints around the house
- Trails of shamrock confetti or glitter
- Green kiss marks on foreheads
- Homemade shamrock cut-outs placed around the house
- Things turned upside down and topsy-turvy: chairs, toys, books
- Lucky Charms cereal opened and spilled
- Green eggs in the fridge green (Easter egg dye kit)
- Pictures flipped sideways or upside down
- Normally-closed things are open (windows, doors, cabinets, drawers, etc)
- Changed out regular shoelaces for green ones
- Green fingernails and toenails
- Bottles of green water (just a drop of food coloring will do)
- A rainbow made with colorful fruits
- Green ice cubes (freeze water with green coloring the night before)
- A bowl of ‘lucky mix’ (cereal, marshmallows, green M&Ms or other candies, pretzels)
- Green balloons tied to the handle of the toilet or bathroom faucets
There’s no limit to the number of mischievous things that you can do. BE SILLY!
A word of caution from an experienced mom – Don’t jump into this full force if you have never done anything before. It is better to try a couple things, then add to it each year to increase the mischief level. Your kids will love it!
