Tuesday, September 8th

Family Fishing.  8am-10am.  Reedy Creek Visitors Center, 4301 Riverside Drive, Richmond Virginia 23219.  Learn to tie fishing knots, where and how to cast and how to identify what you reel in. This course is focused on introducing new people to fishing and building introductory skills, but we welcome seasoned anglers as well. Rods and reels provided. Participants over age 18 that wish to fish must have a valid VA Freshwater License (available online for $23 at https://dgiflicense.virginiainteractive.org/) Wear a bathing suit and river appropriate footwear.  Please register for this event. If you have trouble registering, please come anyway! They can get you set up when you get there.  All September events are free.

Time to Sing. 10am. Cartwheels and Coffee, Carytown.  You and your little ones will enjoy singing, dancing, and making music together. Kids will use simple instruments and movements to learn new songs as well as sing along with their favorites. FREE with admission.

Geology Hike.  11am-1pm.  Tredegar Parking Area, 300 Tredegar St., Richmond VA 23219.  Enjoy a leisurely hike around Belle Isle as we discuss the geologic history of our state and point out several interesting rock formations along the way. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn the basics of geology in a hands on context and better understand the significance of the fall line in our city. Please bring water, a snack and hiking shoes.  Please register for this event. If you have trouble registering, please come anyway!  They can get you set up when you get there.  All September events are free.

Weekly Storytime.  11am.  Pottery Barn Kids, Short Pump Mall.  Kids can enjoy some of their favorite books read aloud.

Tree ID.  11am-1pm.  Tredegar Parking Area, 300 Tredegar St., Richmond VA 23219.   Hike with a guide familiar with the park’s flora to gain familiarity with the incredible biodiversity of the plants of the park system. Participants will learn key concepts associated with plant identification and learn to use a dichotomous key to identify any unknown plants. Please bring hiking shoes, water and a snack. Ages 12 and up. Maximum Group Size: 15.  Please register for this event.   All September events are free.

Frog’s Eye Tour.  2pm-4pm.  Reedy Creek Visitors Center, 4301 Riverside Drive, Richmond Virginia 23219.  snorkel, swim and giggle in the river as we learn about the James River Park from the eye-level level of all our water friends. Please bring water (to drink) and snacks, and dress to be in the water. We will provide snorkel masks, but feel free to bring your own! Sneakers or other close-toed shoes are required.  Please register for this event.  If you have trouble registering, please come anyway! We can get you set up when you get to the park.  All September events are free.

Family Jump Night.  6pm-8pm.  Pump It Up, 9555 Kings Charter Drive, Suite I, Ashland , VA.  Come play on the giant, soft, fun-filled interactive inflatables during Family Jump Time, then enjoy a pizza dinner together! Pizzas and 2-liter drinks can be ordered at check-in, and food will be available later in the playtime. Check the calendar for any schedule changes. Fee.

Move with Me. 10am. Cartwheels and Coffee, Carytown.  Clap your hands, stomp your feet, move your bodies to the beat! Miss Sarah Ruppel, of the Richmond Ballet, leads a creative and energetic movement time for your little dancers every Wednesday at 10. Free with admission.

Mommy and Me. 10am-11:30am. Willow Lawn – Outside on the Plaza. Join The Shops at Willow Lawn on the second Wednesday of every month as they host a free morning out with live entertainment and activities designed to enhance parents’ interaction with their children. This month – Kurt Stemhagen. Free.

Story Time.  11am.  bbgb tales for kids, 3003 W Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221.  A local children’s bookstore in Carytown with story time every Wednesday at 11am.

YOGA STORYTIME.  6pm.  Dumbarton Library.  Yoga Storytime. Get ready to stretch your body and your mind as we share stories and learn some basic yoga poses. Space is limited. Groups please call in advance. For the whole family.  Free.

Drawing: Geared Up.  5pm – 6:30 pm.  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Art Education Center, Studio 1.  Ages 13 – 17.  Explore composition and mechanics while drawing parts of bikes and using bike parts to draw.  Fee.

Storytime. 10am. Cartwheels & Coffee, Carytown.  Sponsored by bbgb tales for kids and lead by Miss Hannah, story time will take you to far away lands, introduce you to new friends with all sorts of interesting creatures, and allow you to discover a world of imagination inside your favorite books!   Free with admission.

Special Night for Special Needs.  5:30pm-7:30pm.  Children’s Museum – Fredericksburg.  Special Night for Special Needs is an evening especially for the families of children with special needs age 10 and under.  Visitors enjoy all the museum has to offer and benefit from the availability of adapted materials, special activities, a cool-down space and reduced number of visitors.  Free.

Parent’s Night Out.  6:30pm-10:30pm.  Pump It Up, 9555 Kings Charter Drive, Suite I, Ashland , VA.  The kids will be happy with an evening of jumping, games, dinner and a movie! 4-12 years old.  Fee.

Saturday, September 12th

Boot Camp for New Dads.  9am-Noon.  Locations vary.  Delivered by First Things First of Greater Richmond.  A unique father-to-father community-based workshop prepares and equips expectant dads to become confidently engaged with their infants, support their mates, and navigate their transformation into dads.  Fee.

Free Irish Dance Class.  9am-10am.  Heart of Ireland School of Dance, 14257 Midlothian Turnpike, Midlothian, VA 23113.  Try a free Irish dance class and see what all the fun is about!  One-hour class for students to try before they buy.  Open to ALL dancers, ages 3 to adult.  Young ones must be potty-trained. Second Saturday with The Story Lady.  1pm.  Barnes and Noble-Chesterfield Towne Center. Children’s storyteller and author, Ali Pfautz, aka The Story Lady, will entertain little ones with interactive tales and songs. Come join the fun! Free.

Celebrate Latin American Art: Mexico!   11 am – 3 pm.  VMFA Atrium & Sculpture Garden.  Bring the whole family to VMFA’s fiesta patrias (Patriot Festival) to celebrate Mexico’s independence. Enjoy traditional dance, performances by the Latin Ballet, music, artist demonstrations, and crafts, including making a Day of the Dead skull shaker, a papel picado (paper garland), a Tree of Life candlestick, and more. The ringing of bells, a tradition of Mexico’s Independence Day, will signal the start of our annual parade through the Sculpture Garden. Let’s not forget loteria (Mexican bingo) with prizes!  Free, no registration required.

Grand Family Affair.  2pm-4pm.  Walkerton Tavern.  A timeless way to celebrate and play! Take a giant step back into time and join us for an afternoon of lawn games and 19th century fun as we pay tribute to National Grandparents’ Day 2015.  Bring the whole family, to this multi-generational event.  Free.

Carnival of Music: Musical Playdate.   4:00-4:40pm.  Melody Magic Music Studio, 3041 Lauderdale Drive.  Enjoy some pretend carnival games, drum-playing, and more! In this class for children ages 0-7 years, you’ll play, listen, sing (encouraged but optional!), move, dance, and giggle with your child. It’s fun. Lots of fun! But the best part?
