How to Make a Monster.     Science Museum of Virginia.  Uncover the world of monsters and creatures from the movies! Find out how they’re brought to life – from an idea to the final project – and take a look at the behind-the scenes art and technology of animatronics. Included with exhibit admission; free for members.

Today – September 30th

Water Play.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.   During warm spring, summer, and fall days, the Children’s Garden is the coolest place to be! Bring or wear your bathing suit and water shoes to enjoy the gentle water sprays. Don’t forget a towel and remember that swimming diapers are required for those not potty-trained. Water Play is operational when the air temperature is 70 degrees or higher.  April 21 – Sept 30. (weather permitting).  Free with garden admission.

Today – October 12th

Butterflies Live!  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Butterflies LIVE! is an indoor exhibit in the Conservatory geared for all ages. Get up close and personal as hundreds of tropical butterflies feed, flutter and take flight all around you. Explore their origins, preferred habitats and lifecycles. Free with garden admission.

Monday, September 1st

Garden Art Studio.  1pm-3pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Work alongside staff artist, Katelyn Coyle, in the colorful Garden Art Studio located beside the Hidden Tunnel. Drop-in and unfold your creative energy. Use provided materials to collaborate, explore and reflect on your own Garden experience.  Free with Garden admission.

Tuesday, September 2nd

Kids Club.  9:30am – 10:30am  Chesterfield Towne Center Food Court.  Plenty of fun and light refreshments.  Entertainment this month is radio sponsor  93.1 “The Wolf” & Chris Campbell.  Free.

Wednesday, September 3rd

Drop in and Dig!  9am.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Families with children are invited to drop-in and participate in simple, easy to learn gardening tasks under the guidance of Children’s Garden staff and volunteers. These family-oriented gardening experiences can easily be enjoyed at home. Free with Garden admission.

Free Music Class at Melody Magic.  10:30am and 11:20am.  3041 Lauderdale Drive, Richmond, VA 23233. For ages 0-5 years.  Ever wondered what goes on in a music class for infants and toddlers? Now is your chance to check it out, for free! Join Melody Magic Music Studio for a free preview class on Wednesday, Sept. 3rd. They will sing, dance, play, and have a wonderful time! Special Night for Special Needs.  5:30pm – 7:30pm.  CMoR Chesterfield.  An evening especially for children 10 years old and younger who have special needs and their families.  Enjoy museum exploration, adapted materials, special activities, and reduced number of visitors on this special night. Children will have access and learning opportunities, but most importantly they’ll have fun!  Admission is Free.

First Friday Sampler.  5:30pm-8pm.  Visual Arts Center of Richmond.  Try your hand at different art samplers.  Budget and kid-friendly, but some have a minimum age requirement.  Fee.

Saturday, September 6th

Build a Wizard of Oz  Birdhouse.  9am-Noon. Local Home Depot Stores. FREE hands-on workshops designed for children ages 5 – 12 offered at all Home Depot stores. Workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills, tool safety and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment. All kids get to keep their craft and receive a FREE Kids Workshop Apron, commemorative pin and certificate of achievement. Register online. Free.

Boot Camp for New Dads.  9am-Noon.  Locations vary.  Delivered by First Things First of Greater Richmond.  A unique father-to-father community-based workshop prepares and equips expectant dads to become confidently engaged with their infants, support their mates, and navigate their transformation into dads.  Fee.

Stories at the Museum. 11am-Noon. Virginia Historical Society. Special educator-led readings of children’s history books and a make-it-and-take-it craft activity related to the text. Open to all ages. This month – Hispanic American Heritage. Free.

Grandparents Storytime.  1pm.  Barnes & Noble Chesterfield.  Featuring How to Babysit a Grandma and How to Babysit a Grandpa. Storytime and activities for grandparents and kids.  Free.

Romp n’ Roll Mechanicsville Kids Night Out.  6pm-9pm.  6300 Mechanicsville Turnpike, Mechanicsville VA 23111. Every kid deserves a special night out…and so do you!  Parents get an evening to themselves while the children get to run and play with our energetic instructors and enjoy a pizza party dinner at Romp n’ Roll!  No need to be a member; register by calling 804-730-2060. ($20 for one child, $35 for two children, $40 for three children; no discounts apply, children must be siblings to qualify for pricing)

National Grandparent’s Day!

Beyond the Walls Opening.  Noon – 4 pm, ribbon cutting at 12:15 pm.  Memorial Foundation for Children Teaching Gallery, in the MWV Art Education Center, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.  An interactive exhibition for visitors of all ages to explore daily life in imperial China through activities that include writing Chinese characters on a touch screen, designing personal virtual seals and more! Explore the new exhibition and come by the studios to participate in art activities inspired by Chinese artwork from the VMFA collection and a lantern-making workshop hosted by 1708 Gallery.   Free, no registration required.

Open Studio Sundays.  1pm-4pm.  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Art Education Center.  Go by the studios anytime between Noon and 4 pm to enjoy “make-it, take-it” art activities inspired by objects from the VMFA collection. A new art project offered every month, with assistance from VMFA volunteers! (For groups of eight or more children, please email megan.liles@vmfa.museum.)  Free, no registration required.

A Grand Family Affair.  1pm‐3pm. Deep Run Park.  Grandparents, grandkids, and families‐come share an afternoon together! This intergenerational event is designed for families to celebrate Grandparents’ Day. There will be lawn games, pickleball, Wii, crafts, table games and more. Information: 501‐5096.  Free.
