Virginia Rep’s Children’s Theatre Celebrates Summer with Go, Dog. Go!

go dog go bigVirginia Repertory Theatre opens Go, Dog. Go! on Friday, July 11 at Virginia Rep’s Children’s Theatre at Willow Lawn, 1601 Willow Lawn Drive. The show will run through August 3, 2014. Based on the popular children’s book by P.D. Eastman, this production features music and lyrics by Michael Koemer and book by Steven Dietz and Allison Gregory. The show lasts about 75 minutes with a 10 minute intermission and is best enjoyed by children ages 3+.

Go, Dog. Go! has been a family favorite for over fifty years. It’s silly, fun, and full of colorful images and repeatable words that still resonate with kids of all ages. Director Sarah Roquemore describes the energetic production. “The fun-loving, hard-working, and fast-moving dogs from PD Eastman’s classic book come to hilarious life onstage, recreating iconic pages as songs, dances, comedy routines, and circus acts. True to the very last page, we close the show with a gigantic dog party, sure to send everyone home howling!”

Roquemore is the Arts Integration Manager at Virginia Repertory Theatre and has most recently directed Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, and the touring production of The Story of Jamestown.  P.J. Freebourn returns to Virginia Rep’s Children’s Theatre as MC Dog after recent roles in ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (Clement C. Moore) and Busytown (Lowly Worm). Tricia Wiles will be making her Children’s Theatre debut in the role of Hattie. A performance student at VCU, Wiles was recently seen in their production of Hairspray.

Rounding out the company are Sam Brackley, Andrew Goins, Meg Carnahan, and The Richmond SPCA joins Virginia Rep Children’s Theatre as the Community Partner will host dog adoption events in the theatre before and after the 2:00PM performances on July 12 and 13. Richmond SPCA trick dogs will also be performing on stage after select performances in the run.
