How to Make a Monster.     Science Museum of Virginia.  Uncover the world of monsters and creatures from the movies! Find out how they’re brought to life – from an idea to the final project – and take a look at the behind-the scenes art and technology of animatronics. Included with exhibit admission; free for members.

Today – September 30th

Water Play.  Weekdays 1pm-4:45pm.  Saturdays and Sundays 9am-4:45pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.   During warm spring, summer, and fall days, the Children’s Garden is the coolest place to be! Bring or wear your bathing suit and water shoes to enjoy the gentle water sprays. Don’t forget a towel and remember that swimming diapers are required for those not potty-trained. Water Play is operational when the air temperature is 70 degrees or higher.  April 21 – Sept 30. (weather permitting).  Free with garden admission.

Monday, June 9th

Garden Art Studio.  1pm-3pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Work alongside staff artist, Katelyn Coyle, in the colorful Garden Art Studio located beside the Hidden Tunnel. Drop-in and unfold your creative energy. Use provided materials to collaborate, explore and reflect on your own Garden experience.  Free with Garden admission.

Father’s Day Celebration.  5:30pm-7pm.  Romp n’ Roll Midlothian, 1541 Busy Street, Midlothian VA 23236.  Calling all kids! Bring your Dad to Romp n’ Roll for a special event in his honor! Young @ Art: Pictures & Puzzles.  10am-11am .  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Art Education Center.  For kids ages 2 ½ – 5.  Explore collage and assemblage by piecing together different shapes and materials for your own fantastic creations.  Fee.

Garden Explorations for Families.  10:15am.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  For children 3-5 years (older siblings welcome) with accompanying adult.  Enjoy story time and a fun-filled adventure while exploring different areas of the Garden. We observe our surroundings using a variety of hands-on activities and take-home treasures. Themes change each month and new stories, activities and garden areas are introduced each week.  Fee.

Passport to Adventure: A Magic Tree House Live Reading Tour.  4pm.  Children’s Museum of Richmond – Central.  BBGB Tales for Kids and The Children’s Museum of Richmond will host “Passport to Adventure! A Magic Tree House Live Reading Tour” — a national tour, sponsored by Random House Children’s Books, that brings Jack&Annie — characters from Mary Pope Osborne’s beloved Magic Tree House series — live and in person with their fans. Fans will enjoy Jack and Annie’s magical traveling adventures through a live, theatrical performance with songs based on the bestselling Magic Tree House series. Events will also include cool give-aways, and an official Jack and Annie “Book stamping.”  This event is free to the public, museum admission is required to access museum exhibits.

All Pro Dad.  6:30pm-7:30pm.  Chesterfield Town Center.  To provide dads and their elementary-aged kids with a chance to bond beyond school and the home, First Things First offers a monthly All Pro Dad program. Using the nationally recognized program, First Things First provides chances for dads to interact with their elementary age kids in a fun-filled, engaged environment while enjoying some great pizza courtesy of MARTINS’s generosity. Dads and kids will walk away with great life lessons and a stronger connection. Space is limited and registration required.  Free.

Wednesday, June 11th

Mommy and Me.  10am-11:30am.  Willow Lawn – Outside on the Plaza.  Join The Shops at Willow Lawn on the second Wednesday of every month as they host a free morning out with live entertainment and activities designed to enhance parents´ interaction with their children. This month – The Diggity Dudes.  Free.

Families After 5.  5pm-9pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.  Enjoy Flowers After 5 with the family and special events for kids in the Children’s Garden.  Listen to story books, garden, participate in walkabouts and have good, green fun. Featured activities will rotate based on the Children’s Garden monthly seasonal themes.  WaterPlay will remain open until 8pm.  Fee, free for members.

Family Volunteer Day.  9am-11am.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.  Spend time with your family outdoors at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden by volunteering together in the Children’s Garden. Show your children the value of giving to the community while getting some fresh air and a beautiful view. Pre-registration required:Families must sign up in advance by filling out a group volunteer application and then reserve the desired volunteer dates online.

FROZEN Musical Playdate.  10:00am-10:40am.  Melody Magic Music Studio, 3041 Lauderdale Drive, Richmond, VA.  Kids up to age 7 will love this playdate, based on the music from the popular Disney movie “Frozen!” We will use magic frozen wands to do a freeze dance (helping our inhibitory control, of course!), drum like we are cutting ice, dance and sing with microphones, and so much more. Tarzan.  The Steward School, Robins Theatre.  Presented by CharacterWorks.   Based on Edgar Rice Burrough’s Tarzan of the Apes and the smash-hit 1999 Disney animated film, TARZAN tells the story of an infant boy orphaned on the shores of West Africa. Sunday, June 15th

Father’s Day.  1pm-4pm.  Celebrate the man in your life with family fun, model boats, live music, and a tasty cookout (for purchase).  Enjoy a free concert (included in Garden admission) by the Jangling Reinharts down at the Bloemendaal House where food will be available for purchase. The Richmond Model Yacht Club will also be on-site showing off different model boats on Sydnor Lake.   Included with Garden admission; includes Butterflies LIVE! exhibit.

Reenactment of the Second Virginia Convention and Henry’s “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!”.  1pm-3pm.  St. John’s Church.   1:15 pm — Doors open.  Seating is on a first-come, first served basis.  1:30 pm — Music program.  1:45 pm — Reenactment begins.  This event is also FREE, with a suggested donation of $5.00.  Reservations are available for groups of ten or more for fee of $5 per person, up to 100 reserved seats.

Father’s Day Ice Cream Social. 4pm-6pm.  Walkerton Tavern.  Treat your family to delicious free Bruster’s ice cream while listening to the music of the Henrico Concert Band, making homemade ice cream, and playing your favorite backyard games. Tours of these historic gems will also be available. Free.
