Butterflies LIVE!  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Visitors have the opportunity to get up close and personal with these amazing creatures – watch them fly, feed and flutter all around you.  Free with Garden Admission.

Water Play at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  During warm spring, summer, and fall days, the Children’s Garden is the coolest place to be! Bring or wear your bathing suit and water shoes to enjoy the gentle water sprays. Swimming diapers are required for those not potty-trained.  Water Play is operational when the air temperature is 70 degrees or higher. Enjoy story time and a fun-filled adventure while exploring different areas of the Garden. Observe your surroundings using a variety of hands-on activities and take-home treasures. Themes change each month and new stories, activities and garden areas are introduced each week. Garden Explorations for Families is an excellent opportunity for homeschoolers! Fee.

Target $1 Family Night.   5pm-7:30pm.  Children’s Museum – Central.  Bring the whole family to enjoy what The Children’s Museum has to offer from 5:00-7:30pm on the third Friday of every month for just $1 per person!

LiveSky: Mysteries of the Universe.  6pm.   What is dark matter? Is the universe infinite? Explore these questions and other top things astronomers really want to know. At 8 pm join Richmond Astronomical Society members as they share their telescopes for a look into the vastness of space, weather permitting. $5, free for members.

Saturday, August 17th

Movin’ and Groovin’.  10am-10:40am.  Melody Magic Music Studio — 3041 Lauderdale Drive.  It’s time to dance, play, move, and groove! Come join us at Melody Magic Music Studio as we groove to the (steady) beat with drums, develop physical skills with stop-and-go musical games, encourage social interaction with group circle dances, and enjoy so much more musical fun! From Foundry to Fire.  2pm.  American Civil War Center.  Come learn about the importance of the cannon manufacturing capabilities of Tredegar Ironworks, as well as, the role field artillery played in the Civil War. A costumed artillery crew will explain the process of making and testing the cannon and then demonstrate its use on the battlefield!  Fee.

Anthem Moonlight Ride.  Take in the sights and sounds of RVA by bike.  There is an 8 mile course and 17 mile course thru the North side and near West End.  Riders as young as 8 years old are permitted with parent or guardian supervision. Children under the age of 8 may NOT ride their own bike. Tri-cycles and training wheels are NOT permitted. Approved bike trailers are allowed.  Fee.

Sunday, August 18th

Reenactment of the Second Virginia Convention.  The Patrick Henry Committee invites you to bring your friends and family to a reenactment of the Second Virginia Convention of March 1775. In the presence of Washington, Jefferson, and other notable Virginians, Patrick Henry delivered his passionate call for liberty, uttering the immortal words, “Give me liberty or give me death!” These events are free and open to the public. Doors open at 1pm for seating on a first-come, first-served basis, Music program begins at 1:30pm, and the reenactment begins at 2pm.  Please call 804-648-5015 for more information.  Free to the public, with a suggested $5 per person donation.
