Richmond Summer Camp: Making of a Champion for Tennis and Basketball

Camps are led by Mark Newlen, Camp Director, who has directed over 100 camps and clinics and taught over 10,000 young people the game of basketball and tennis the past 20 years. He knows what it takes to BE and MAKE a champion!

These co-ed camps offer a wonderful opportunity for players of all skill levels to learn the game of basketball or tennis.

Basketball

Learn the fundamentals in an atmosphere of fun, sportsmanship, teamwork and commitment to excellence.  Shooting, passing, dribbling, ball handling, defense, offensive moves, rules and team concepts will be taught in an encouraging environment with proven and fun-filled teaching techniques.

Don’t miss this special opportunity for one of the best camp experiences of the summer. Boys & Girls ages 7-13 are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Tennis

This camp provides a wonderful learning experience for beginner to intermediate tennis players. Boys & Girls ages 6-14 are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Learn the game in a non-pressured, supportive atmosphere through fun-filled and proven teaching techniques. Emphasis will be placed on age-appropriate skills and helping campers develop a life-long enjoyment of tennis.

Forehands, backhands, serves, volleys, approach shots, passing shots and lobs will be taught in an easy-to-apply fashion. Excellent stroke technique as well as emphasis on tennis etiquette, strategy, rules, scoring, footwork and sportsmanship will give the campers an excellent foundation in the fundamentals of the game.

Exceptional, dedicated and experienced counselors will do everything possible to provide the absolute best experience for each child.

About the Camp Director

Mark Newlen was recently chosen as one of only ten Sports Ethics Fellows by the Institute for International Sports, for his devotion and commitment to young people and his services to the international sports community.

As a college player Mark made the Atlantic Coast Conference All Academic Team and played on the University of Virginia’s ACC Tournament Championship team.  He has directed over 100 camps and clinics and taught over 10,000 young people the game of basketball and tennis the past 20 years.

Mark is qualified to teach the characteristics of a champion on & off the court.

  • International camp director and clinician – England, Ireland, Poland, and Singapore
  • Made the Atlantic Coast Conference All Academic Team and played on the University of Virginia’s only ACC Tournament Championship Team
  • Chosen to coach at the World Scholar Athlete Games the summer of 2006 with participants from over 160 countries
  • Has successfully coached high school and college basketball for 12 years, and boys and girls tennis teams for 18 years
  • Played professional basketball in England averaging 32 points per game and 92.5% from the free throw line
  • Currently teaching and coaching at the Collegiate School, Richmond VA
  • Voted Prep League Coach of the year
  • Certified United States Professional Tennis Teaching professional and has taught individual and group lessons for 15 years
