Today – Saturday, December 15th

A Christmas Story. The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. Henrico Theatre Company. Humorist Jean Shepherd’s memoir of growing up in the 1940′s Midwest follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. He pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus. The consistent response: “You’ll shoot your eye out.” All of the elements from the beloved motion picture are here for this joyous celebration of childhood. Tickets on sale starting October 29. Fee.

Nightly Holiday Light Shows & Live Holiday Entertainment.  Stony Point Fashion Park.  Come celebrate the season and enjoy live entertainment every Friday – Sunday throughout the center. View the complete schedule here.  Animated light shows take place at the top and bottom of each hour, beginning at 5 pm at the Community Tree.  Free.

A Colonial Christmas.  Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center. Offers a glimpse of 17th- and 18th-century holiday traditions with special tours and interpretive programs and, from December 26 through 31, musical entertainment of the period.

Today – Monday, January 7th (Closed Dec. 24 & 25)

GardenFest of Lights. Nightly, 5pm-10pm. Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. One of Richmond’s most popular family holiday events. Holiday tradition features more than a half million lights, botanical decorations, trains, holiday dinners, family activities and more. Activities for families and children include Merry Mondays every Monday evening from 5pm-8pm throughout GardenFest, featuring story time with the Garden Keeper, s’mores at the warming fire, and Santa sightings in the Conservatory. Fee.

Today – January 31st

RVA on Ice. 4pm-10pm. 6th and Broad Street. Grand Opening of ice skating rick next to CenterStage. Open through January 31st (weather permitting). Visit the website for rink times and hours. Fee.

Fan Holiday House Tour. 1pm-5pm. The 50th Annual Holiday House Tour, featuring an array of fabulously-decorated homes in the Fan District, will be held on December 8th and 9th, 2012.  Official ticket sales through Eventbrite.com. Fee.

Santa Breakfast Benefit at Bass Pro Shop. 8am and 10am. Visit Santa, have a great breakfast buffet and make a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities. Delicious breakfast buffet and photo with Santa. Purchase tickets at Customer Service at Bass Pro Outdoor World or charge by phone at 804-496-4700. All proceeds benefit Hanover Arc and Hanover Community Support Services – two non- profits improving the lives of children and adults living with disabilities. Fee.

Tuesday, December 11th

Short Pump Pals Clubhouse Meeting. 11am.    Short Pump Mall Food Court.  This month – Little Red & The Gingerbread Man Puppet Show.  Free.

Training Wheels for Good Behavior. 6:30-8:30pm. Delivered by Commonwealth Parenting. Fee.

Nutcracker Selections.  6pm-7pm. Deep Run Recreation Center, 9910 Ridgefield Pkwy, Henrico. The Concert Ballet of Virginia presents dance and music selections from the Nutcracker. Young viewers will enjoy watching dancers perform in full ballet attire. The evening will conclude with a social to meet the dancers. A special guest will also be on site to greet the children. For ages 2-5 with an adult. Free.

Craft-A-Thon. 6pm. North Park Library, Henrico. Free.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Holidays. 7:30pm-9pm. Historic Henrico Theatre. Ho! Ho! Ho! Happy Holidays!” is a light-hearted program that either parodies one of your favorite holiday songs or presents a novelty song that is seldom heard during the season. Familiar holiday carols are great, but sometimes they just don’t fit the mood. If you want something funny and upbeat for your holiday entertainment, you will experience some funny songs that are sure to make you smile.

GrowRVA Food Truck at the Science Museum of Virginia. 7-8pm. Bring your friends and family to the Science Museum to find your favorite food trucks with a variety of gourmet, ethnic and specialty foods. 5-8 p.m. Fee to purchase food.

Henrico Pops Chorus Holiday Concert. 7:30pm.  Henrico Theatre, 305 E. Nine Mile Road, Henrico. A concert of festive holiday music for the entire family!  For all ages. Reservations required. Free.

Wednesday, December 12th

Victorian Christmas Traditions. Noon-1:30pm. The Museum of the Confederacy, 1201 E. Clay St.,Richmond. Find out how people celebrated Christmas during the Victorian Era, which included the years of the Civil War. First, a Powerpoint presentation will cover Christmas traditions of the time. Then take a guided tour of the White House of the Confederacy, specially decorated for the holidays. Free for members, $5 for non-members.

Free Guitar Lessons. 2pm and 3pm. Take a free introductory guitar lesson! Musical instrument company Hohner, Inc. and the Science Museum offer free lessons to children 5 years & up and adults. Stories at the Museum.  11am-Noon. Virginia Historical Society.  Explore American History with arts and crafts and the reading of a children’s history book.  This month’s theme – Famous Americans.  Open to children of all ages.  Free.

Elf the Movie. 2pm. The Tad DuPriest Foundation is hosting its third annual complimentary holiday movie at the Byrd Theatre – showing Elf this year. Free on first come, first serve basis.

Kids Night Out at Romp n Roll.  5pm-8pm.  Romp n’ Roll West End, 9677 W. Broad St. Glen Allen VA 23060.  Every kid deserves a special night out…and so do you! That’s why we created Kids Night Out. Parents get an evening to themselves while the children get to run and play with our energetic instructors and enjoy a Pizza Party dinner at Romp n’ Roll! Colonial Christmas.  10am-5pm.  Henricus Historical Park.  Experience a Colonial Christmas in the re-created Citie of Henricus. Visitors will explore the etiquette, norms, customs and laws regarding Christmas in Elizabethan-Jacobean English households in the early 17th century through first-person interpretation.  Fee.
