Monday, January 19th

Mad Science Holiday Camp.  9am-4pm.   Mad Science Laboratory, 5500 Cox Road, Suite H, Glen Allen VA 23060.    Kids at home and bored on those three day weekends? Everyone else off work except for you? Drop the kids off for a day of camp at the Mad Science Lab!  They hold full day camps on many school holidays. Holiday camps run from 9 AM to 4 PM for children in grades 1 to 6. Holiday camps let your kids participate in a variety of science projects and activates. They also include a movie and snack. You should pack a lunch for your child. The cost is $50 with before and after care being offered for $10. Check the website for the list of scheduled camps and to register.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at CMoR.  10am – Noon.  CMoR – Central.  Special interactive activities with HandsOn Greater Richmond!  Free with museum admission.

Tuesday, January 20th

Young @ Art: Art in Motion.  11am-Noon.  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Art Education Center.  For ages 2 ½ – 5.  Get groovin’ with lines, patterns, and brush strokes and discover techniques artists use to show movement in their work.  Fee.

Exceptional Kids Night.  5pm-7pm.  Swing into Monkey Joe’s Richmond on the 3rd Tuesday of every month.  For children ages 2-12.   FREE admission for kids w/special needs! Just $5/child for siblings! Closed to the General Public.

Wednesday, January 21st

Mad Science in Lab Workshop.  10am- 11am.   Mad Science Laboratory, 5500 Cox Road, Suite H, Glen Allen VA 23060.  Science workshops will be held on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 10:00 AM at the Mad Science Lab in Innsbrook for Elementary age students. These workshops are perfect for homeschoolers. Workshops are $10 each, last approximately 60 minutes and include a take home science activity. Thursday, January 22nd

The Crazy Hair Tour — Secret Keeper Girl’s fourth themed tour — is a Bible-based relationship-building experience for moms and their tween daughters (typically ages 8-12).  West End Assembly of God & Robinson Theater. Fee.

Superhero Party.  3pm.  Dumbarton Library.   Calling all superheroes! Come show off your super selves and test your powers, design some superhero accessories, and play some awesome games! Costumes are welcome. Ages 5-11.  Free.

Colorful Creations.  4:15pm-6pm.  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Art Education Center.   For ages 5 – 8.  Investigate color theory through works of art found in the galleries. In the studio, blend primary colors to create a color wheel-inspired work of your own.  Fee.

Royal Tea.  7pm.  Varina Library.  Calling all princes and princesses to come to the Varina Library Kingdom for stories, a craft and refreshments.  Free.

Virginia College Savings Plan.  7pm.  Twin Hickory Library.  A representative from the Virginia College Savings Plan will discuss the four different 529 plans available and answer your questions to prepare for those future college tuition bills!  Free.

Friday, January 23rd

Family Portraits.  5pm-7pm.  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Art Education Center.   Recommended for children ages 5 – 12.  Visit the galleries to find paintings that depict children and their families. Then take turns modeling and drawing a portrait of each other!  Fee.

Arena Racing.  7:30pm.  Richmond Coliseum.  Drivers in ½ scale stock cars racing around a $1/2 million high-banked race track turning laps in UNDER 8 seconds flat while competing side-by-side–bumping, rubbing, flipping and racing in the Richmond Coliseum to get their share of over $50,000.00 in cash paid out over the season!  Go to the Coliseum an hour early for a driver meet & greet, included in the price of each ticket!  Fee.

Saturday, January 24th

Boot Camp for New Dads.  9am-Noon.  Locations vary.  Delivered by First Things First of Greater Richmond.  A unique father-to-father community-based workshop prepares and equips expectant dads to become confidently engaged with their infants, support their mates, and navigate their transformation into dads.  Fee.

Anniversary of The Battle of Trent’s Reach – Civil War History at Henricus.  10am-5pm.  Henricus Historical Park.  Join Henricus Historical Park for a series of lectures and demonstrations about the last naval fight (January 24-25, 1865) of the James River Squadron of the Confederate States Navy.  This will be a rain or shine event.  Fee.

Richmond Symphony Union LolliPops: Pinocchio’s Adventures in Funland. 11am.   Carpenter Theatre, Richmond CenterStage.  Join the Richmond Symphony for this lively re-telling of the classic children’s story of Pinocchio with renowned narrator and performer Charlotte Blake Alston. The performance includes a pre-concert festival with a musical instrument petting zoo and other activities for young audiences. Pre-concert festivals take place in Rhythm Hall one hour prior to concert.  Fee.

Drawing in the Galleries.  1pm-4pm.  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Art Education Center.   For ages 6 – 9.  Enjoy roaming through the galleries in search of inspirational art! Practice observing and rendering lines, shapes, and textures just like the masters.  Fee.

LEGO Club.  1pm-3pm.  Bon Air Library, 9103 Rattlesnake Rd, Richmond, VA.  Bring your imagination for LEGO fun. Photos of completed creations will be displayed. The club meets on first Saturdays and is recommended for kids ages 6 to 11.  Free.

Tween Craft Club.  2pm.  North Park Library.  Tweens, ages 10-14, join us to make a thumb tack craft.  Free.

Paws To R.E.A.D.  2:30pm.  Gayton Library.  Read a story aloud with a cute and lovable trained therapy dog. Improve your reading confidence and make a new friend! Limited to children 6 years old and older. Register online with your library card. If space is available, walk-ins will be taken if accompanied by parent. Time slots will be assigned upon arrival. Last time slot is at 3:45 p.m.  Registration Required.  Free.

Globe Trekkar Art.  3pm.  Tuckahoe Library.  Explore and experience art from around the globe. Hosted by the West End Teen Advisory Board and open to all ages. Sponsored by the Friends of the Tuckahoe Area Library.  Free.

Romp n’ Roll West End Kids Night Out. 6pm-9pm.  9677 W Broad Street, Glen Allen VA 23060.  Every kid deserves a special night out…and so do you! Parents get an evening to themselves while the children get to run and play with our energetic instructors and enjoy a pizza party dinner at Romp n’ Roll! No need to be a member; register by calling 804-249-5001. ($20 for one child, $35 for two siblings, $40 for three siblings; no discounts apply)

Sunday, January 25th

The History of American Fashion.  2pm-4pm. Henrico Theatre.   Unzip the secrets of clothing as we highlight fashion trends from the 18th to the 20th century. Enjoy a multimedia fashion show as models sashay down the runway in unique clothing of each era. Learn how undergarments helped achieve the ever-changing perfect silhouette. Toast your favorite time period at a reception following the fashion show where original costumes will be on display and you can meet the models. Come dressed up in your favorite era to celebrate and don’t forget your camera!  Free.

Schoolhouse Rock Live!  3pm.   University of Richmond, Alice Jepson Theatre.  The Emmy Award-winning 1970s Saturday morning cartoon reaches another generation with Schoolhouse Rock Live! Follow Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher who is apprehensive about his first day of teaching, learn how to win his students over with imagination and music. “Just a Bill,” “Conjunction Junction,” and “Do The Circulations” are just a few of the clever, singable songs that teach history, grammar, math, science and politics in this delightful, hour-long, theatrical revue for the whole family.  Recommended for ages 6 and up.  Join the Modlin Center for some pre-show fun with Kid Karaoke beginning at 1:30pm in the Booth Lobby, and stay after the show for Modlin Arts After Words, a post-show question-and-answer session with members of the Schoolhouse Rock Live! cast.  Fee.
