Plant Spooky.  King Dominion.  On Saturdays and Sundays from September 26 through November 1, bring the little ones to the all-new Planet Spooky for frightful fun and spooky activities the entire family can enjoy together. It’s all fun and no fear. Activities take place each day from 12pm – 5pm.

Today – October 12th

Butterflies Live!  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Butterflies LIVE! is an indoor exhibit in the Conservatory geared for all ages. Get up close and personal as hundreds of tropical butterflies feed, flutter and take flight all around you. Explore their origins, preferred habitats and lifecycles. Free with garden admission.

Today – Saturday, October 18th

Bethia UMC is holding online registration for basketball and cheerleading (ages K5-6th grade).  Registration/Evaluations/Uniform Fittings will take place on October 18 and November 1 from 10-2.  Bethia UMC is hosting a free basketball clinic on Saturday, November 8 from 9-1. This is for boys and girls ages K5-6th grade. This is a faith-based league.

Poe: Secrets of a Spirit.  1:30pm.  Science Museum of Virginia.  Meet the Edgar Allan Poe you never knew in this dynamic Carpenter Science Theatre Company production.  Available select dates.   Fee.

A Fresh Start For Single Mothers And Their Children.  Thursday Evenings From 6:00pm -8:00pm.   Velocity Church, 3300 Church Road, Henrico, Virginia 23233.  Other locations are available.  Attention Single Mothers!  A Fresh Start Is Designed To Accept, Support and Empower Single Mothers In Their Daily Lives.   Some topics covered:  Managing Your Budget, Health and Wellness / Stress Management, Effective Employment & Interviewing Strategies, Domestic Violence Awareness/ Child Protection, Parenting On Your Own / Keeping Family Traditions, Car Care Essentials, Beauty Out Of Ashes and much more.  Dinner And Childcare / Youth / Teen Mentoring.  All Are Provided At No Cost.  Weekly meetings consist of dinner for mothers/dinner and snacks for kids, informational guest speaker and small group discussion time, fellowship and fun!  Free Goodies and prizes for the moms to take home each week!!  Visit the website for registration information.  For questions contact info@whatsnextfreshstart.org.

Monday, October 6th

Garden Art Studio.  1pm-3pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Work alongside staff artist, Katelyn Coyle, in the colorful Garden Art Studio located beside the Hidden Tunnel. Drop-in and unfold your creative energy. Use provided materials to collaborate, explore and reflect on your own Garden experience.  Free with Garden admission.

Crafting Like Crazy. 6pm-8pm. Eastern Henrico Recreation Center. For ages 8-17. They are crafting like crazy on the first Monday of each month! Dip into paint in October, design with paper (think origami!) in November, and mold fun fabric creations in December. Information: 225-2056. Free.

Tuesday, October 7th

Kids Club.  9:30am – 10:30am  Chesterfield Towne Center Food Court.  Plenty of fun and light refreshments.  Entertainment this month –  Mickey’s Magic Show with Jack The Bunny.  Free.

Young @ Art: Doodle Bug Basics.  11am-Noon.  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Art Education Center.  For ages 2 ½ – 5.  Learn about the parts of art — lines, shapes, colors, and textures — and learn how to make what you imagine!  Fee.

Mommy and Me. 10am-11:30am. Willow Lawn – Outside on the Plaza. Join The Shops at Willow Lawn on the second Wednesday of every month as they host a free morning out with live entertainment and activities designed to enhance parents´ interaction with their children. This month – Hope Harris and the Cousins Jamboree. Free.

Drop in and Dig!  1pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Families with children are invited to drop-in and participate in simple, easy to learn gardening tasks under the guidance of Children’s Garden staff and volunteers. These family-oriented gardening experiences can easily be enjoyed at home. Free with Garden admission.

Knowing how to set appropriate expectations, communicate, reward, provide consequences, etc. are all parenting skills critical to the success of the child with ADHD. You will leave this class with these skills, a plan and renewed hope!  Fee.

Richmond Folk Festival.  Downtown Richmond’s historic riverfront.  Families can enjoy music on seven stages.  Don’t mis the Genworth Financial Family Stage and The Genworth Financial Family Area brought to you by the generous contribution of Genworth Financial and produced by the Children’s Museum of Richmond.  Free.

School of the Musketeer at Henricus.  Henricus Historical Park.   Experience an entire weekend learning about military and civilian life as the first Colonists in the New World. Instructors and other support personnel provide an interactive environment in 17th-century life and culture; overnight experience included. Fee is $30 and is all inclusive. Liberty Christian School’s Fall Festival.  9am to 3pm.  Liberty Christian School, 8094 Liberty Circle, Mechanicsville, VA 23111.   Huge Indoor Yard Sale starting at 7am, There will be inflatables and games for the kids. Silent Auction, Bake Sale, Food and More.

Build a Haunted House. 10am. Local Lowe’s Stores. Halloween’s right around the corner. Get your kids in the spirit by bringing them into Lowe’s to build their own spooky Haunted House!  Preregistration required.  Free.

Family Movie Night.  5:30pm-9:30pm.  Chesterfield County Fairgrounds, 10300 Courthouse Rd.  Bring your family and enjoy a movie under the stars! Watch Frozen on a 26 ft. portable projector screen. Art Without Limits.  1pm-4pm.  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Art Education Center.  For ages 6 – 9.  Experiment with nontraditional applications in drawing and painting. Activities include gesture drawings, abstract renderings, and a variety of other ways to use creativity.  Fee.

Hanover Hawk Marching Invitational. 2pm-9pm. Hanover High School, 10307 Chamberlayne Rd., Mechanicsville, VA 23116. The event will feature marching bands from across the state performing in competition and including brass, woodwinds, percussion and color guard. Rain or shine. Price: Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for children (age 3-12) and seniors (55+) and free for children 2 and under. Concessions will be available.

Romp n’ Roll Midlothian Kids Night Out.  6pm-9pm.  11541 Busy Street, Midlothian VA 23236.  Every kid deserves a special night out…and so do you!  Parents get an evening to themselves while the children get to run and play with our energetic instructors and enjoy a pizza party dinner at Romp n’ Roll!  No need to be a member; register by calling 804-893-3142. Petersburg Haunts Tour.  7pm.   Petersburg Courthouse, Petersburg, VA.   Meet at the Courthouse, 7 Courthouse Ave., 15 minutes before the tour starts at 7pm.  Find out why Petersburg is such a “spirited” city and visit some of the town’s most historic buildings. 90 minute tours are led by costumed, lantern-carrying storytellers. 804-943-8635.  Fee.

Eerie Nights Ghost Tour.  8pm & 10pm.  Main Street Side of the 17th Street Farmers Market.  Eerie Nights is a theatrical story telling experience where guides in character, special effects make-up and costume tell you the history and paranormal activity associated with several historical and haunted locations.  Fee.

Saturday nights through October

Ghouls Ghost Tours.  9pm.  A Trolley Tour.  Main Street Side of the 17th Street Farmers Market (with Eerie Nights Tours).  Tours are geared towards a mature audience but families are welcome. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Haunted Evenings.  Ashland Berry Farm.  4 all new haunts: Booger Woods, Morbid Manor, Old Ridge Asylum, and Sinister Sideshow.  Haunted events all month long.  Fee.
