Shrek, The Musical.  Children’s Theatre of Virginia.  The timeless fairytale of rescued damsel in distress takes many fun and quirky twists as the green and stinky swampland ogre saves Princess Fiona and wins her love.  The show lasts about two hours with intermission and is best enjoyed by children 5 years and older.  Visit the website for show times and fees.  Today – April 27th.

Be the Dinosaur.   A new exhibit at the Science Museum of Virginia.  Check out an animatronic dinosaur and a pterosaur reconstruction as you discover what life was like for dinosaurs. Included with exhibit admission, free for members.  Today – Sunday, May 11th

Garden Art Studio.  1pm-3pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Work alongside staff artist, Katelyn Coyle, in the colorful Garden Art Studio located beside the Hidden Tunnel. Drop-in and unfold your creative energy. Use provided materials to collaborate, explore and reflect on your own Garden experience.  Free with Garden admission.

Happy in Two Homes (Parents of Children of All Ages).  6pm-8pm.  Delivered by Commonwealth Parenting.  Fee.

Water Play.  Weekdays 1pm-4:45pm.  Saturdays and Sundays 9am-4:45pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.   During warm spring, summer, and fall days, the Children’s Garden is the coolest place to be! Bring or wear your bathing suit and water shoes to enjoy the gentle water sprays. Don’t forget a towel and remember that swimming diapers are required for those not potty-trained. Water Play is operational when the air temperature is 70 degrees or higher.  April 21 – Sept 30. (weather permitting).  Free with garden admission.

Earth Day Movie – The Lorax.  4pm.  Ginter Park Library, City of Richmond.  Come and watch the movie, The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. Snacks will be provided. Check out our display of crafts from recycled materials. Learn about new ways to upcycle items at your house.  Free.

Earth Day Celebration.  6pm-9pm.  Rockwood Nature Center, Chesterfield County.  In  partnership with nationally recognized artist Robert Louis Caldwell to highlight the beauty of the natural world that exists all around us through his work.   Naturalists at the RockwoodNatureCenter will hand out tree seedlings to the first 100 visitors, show the Center’s snakes, turtles, and other animals, and answer questions about regional wildlife.  ChesterfieldCounty’s Environmental Division will provide information on the county’s anti-litter campaign.  ‘The Old Time Jam’, Rockwood’s monthly gathering of bluegrass musicians, will play to keep everyone’s toes tapping. Admission to the event is free.

Communication: The Words We Use & How They Hear It (Parents/Caregivers of Children 2- 4 yrs.)  6:30pm-8:30pm.  Delivered by Commonwealth Parenting.  Fee.

Parenting Your ADHD Child.  7pm-9:30pm.  CPR Conference Room, 8500 Bell Creek Road, Mechanicsville, VA23116.  The perfect companion to “When It’s Your Child”, this evening is when strategy becomes the focus. Knowing how to set appropriate expectations, communicate, reward, provide consequences, etc. are all parenting skills critical to the success of the child with ADHD. You will leave this class with these skills, a plan and renewed hope!  Fee.

Wednesday, April 23rd

Drop in and Dig!  1pm-3pm.  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.  Families with children are invited to drop-in and participate in simple, easy to learn gardening tasks under the guidance of Children’s Garden staff and volunteers. These family-oriented gardening experiences can easily be enjoyed at home. So join us to learn how much fun gardening with children can be!

Bermuda Hundred Sesquicentennial Commemorative Event.  7am-9pm.  Horner Park, 17701 Genito Road.  This signature event will demonstrate what siege warfare and fighting during the Civil War would have resembled in May 1864.  Encounter living history demonstrations and hear stories about slaves, civilians, medicine and the U.S. Navy. Encounter infantry, cavalry and artillery demonstrations. The highlight of the weekend will be demonstrations of the documented attacks and defense of the second Battle of Drewry’s Bluff, May 14-16, 1864. A candlelight guided tour of the battle lines will be offered on Saturday evening. Food and drinks will be available.

Saturday, April 26th

Boot Camp for New Dads.  9am-Noon.  Johnston Willis.  Serving more than 1,000 fathers in the Richmond metro area, this unique father-to-father community-based workshop prepares and equips expectant dads to become confidently engaged with their infants, support their mates, and navigate their transformation into dads.   You can take this class only, or you can sign up for a 3-part class that includes Boot Camp for New Dads, Gearing Up for Baby, and When Baby Makes Three. World Tai Chi Day.  9:30am-11am.  Deep Run Park, Henrico County.  On the last Saturday of April each year, tens of thousands of people across the globe practice the ancient art of Tai Chi. This very special event will feature basic instruction in the Sun style for beginners and various demonstrations of other styles. At 10 am, everyone will join together to practice Tai Chi as it moves in a wave across the earth. No previous experience necessary. Instruc­tor: Jack Fuller. Information: 501-5114.  Free.

Spring Into the Arts Festival.  10am-4pm.  The Center for Creative Arts at Shady Grove.  Family event with painters, pottery, fiber art, hand-made jewelry, “meet the instruments” for children and Clarion Brass Quintet performance.

Paws to R.E.A.D. Program.  10:30am-12:30pm.  Ginter Park Library, City of Richmond.  Do you love dogs? Come and read to Harvey, the resident Greyhound! Parents this is a wonderful program that allows children to read aloud, increase their self-esteem, and learn about the human-animal connection. Call and schedule a time to read to Harvey or to one of his canine buddies @ 646-1236.  Free.

The James River Rambler.  Take a scenic train ride with the kids.  90 minutes to the station from Richmond.  Trips are 1.5 hours or 3.5 hours.  Visit the website for more details.  Sponsored by the Old Dominion Chapter of NRHS.

There will be sweets, sandwiches, teas and lemonade available. BRAVO will hold a silent auction at this event and all children may wear their favorite tutu or vest for their own walk down the runway followed by a fashion show of Richmond Ballet tutus and costumes!
