The Children’s Theatre of Virginia Starts the New Year Off with
Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad
Virginia Repertory Theatre opens Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad on Friday, January 31st at the Children’s Theatre of Virginia at Willow Lawn, 1601 Willow Lawn Drive. The show will run through February 21st, 2014 with public performances running for two weekends and school matinees running through the 21st. With book and lyrics by Douglas Jones and music by Ron Barnett, the story is based on the true story of Harriet Tubman. The show lasts about one hour and is best enjoyed by children seven years and older.
Director Sarah Roquemore considers this show to be a celebration of life for one of American history’s greatest heroines. “The true story of how Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery then fearlessly returned to guide over 300 enslaved men, women, and children to freedom comes to life in this beautiful and inspiring production. With an exceptional cast and top-notch production values, this performance is a must-see for adults and children alike.” Roquemore is the Arts Integration Manager at Virginia Repertory Theatre and has most recently directed the touring production of The Story of Jamestown for TheatreIV on Tour and Riding the Bull for TheatreLAB in The Acts of Faith Festival 2012. Recent acting credits for Virginia Rep include several roles in The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales.
Nicole Pearson returns to the Children’s Theatre of Virginia for the second time in the role of Harriet Tubman. Pearson has toured with Theatre IV in the past with nine different shows. Audrey Snyder returns to Virginia Rep as Sarah Bradford after performing in our most recent production of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas as Clement’s wife. Also returning to the Virginia Rep stage and rounding out the company are Keydron Dunn, Lucas Hall, Ashlee Heyward and Todd Patterson.

About Virginia Repertory Theatre
Virginia Repertory Theatre, located in Richmond, VA, combines the talents and strengths of two nonprofit companies that shared facilities, resources, and management teams for over a decade. Now the heritages of Barksdale Theatre (founded in 1953) and Theatre IV (founded in 1975) live on in their new form, as Central Virginia’s leading professional theatre company. Virginia Rep presents national caliber productions of the great dramas, comedies, and musicals including classics, contemporary works, and world premieres, always seeking to demonstrate the unique power of theatre to engage, enthrall, educate, and inspire. Productions are staged at four distinct venues: the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre and Theatre Gym at the downtown Virginia Rep Center, Virginia Rep’s Children’s Theatre of Virginia located at Willow Lawn, and Virginia Rep’s Barksdale Season at Hanover Tavern.
