World Famous Clydesdales Visit the Flying Squirrels on May 31st

Clydesdales_480x270_x6cd4xql_v5wjwb9cThe Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the 2012 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, are pleased to announce the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales, the symbol of quality and tradition for Anheuser-Busch since 1933, are scheduled to make an appearance on Friday, May 31, 2013 at The Diamond for the Squirrels game against the Erie SeaWolves. The world-famous Clydesdales will be accompanied by the iconic red beer wagon as well as a dalmatian. Fans will be allowed to pose for pictures with the entire eight-horse hitch and wagon display before the game.

“These are not just big horses coming to a ballgame. They are celebrities that have been featured during the Super Bowl and other enormous events,” said Flying Squirrels COO and VP Todd “Parney” Parnell. “Fans will be able to get photos and create life long memories with these beautiful creatures. If I could choose to be any animal it would be one of these guys.”

The eight-horse hitch will be harnessed and hitched to the famous red beer wagon outside The Diamond on Friday, May 31st and will be available from 5:00 PM to 6:20 PM for pictures. Additionally, a two-horse hitch is scheduled to make an appearance on the field and around the warning track to deliver the game balls to the umpire.

About Clydesdales

Horses chosen for the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch must be at least three years of age, stand approximately 18 hands – or six feet – at the shoulder, weigh an average of 2000 pounds, must be bay in color, have four white stockings, and a blaze of white on the face and black mane and tail. A gentle temperament is very important as hitch horses meet millions of people each year.

A single clydesdale hitch horse will consume as much as 20-25 quarts of feed, 40-50 pounds of hay and 30 gallons of water per day.

Each hitch travels with a dalmatian. In the early days of brewing, dalmatians were bred and trained to protect the horses and guard the wagon when the driver went inside to make deliveries.

The Budweiser Clydesdales can be viewed at the Anheuser Busch breweries in St. Louis, Mo.; Merrimack, N.H.; and Ft. Collins, Colo. They also may be viewed at Grant’s Farm in St. Louis and at Warm Springs Ranch, the 300-plus acre Clydesdale breeding farm located near Boonville, Mo.
